Review: Patapon

Don’t write off Patapon as childish, because only the people who don’t look at the screen bewildered as an army of little eyeball creatures march in time to some rhythmic tribal chanting will discover a game which is something a lot of titles are forgetting to be these days: fun.

Basically, you are God to a group of weird-looking eyeball things and have to press buttons in time to their tribal chants to help them get food, fend of invading armies and fight bosses. It sounds simple, but that’s its greatest feature. Play with it long enough and you’ll discover a depth to it, as you start to become emotionally attatched to each individual Patapon, and weep uncontrollably when you realise you can’t revive the deceased when they’re killed in a boss fight.

It’s not just a fun, quirky rental. Once you play for while, you start to notice that it’s actually a very capable puzzle game, and you’ll have to use your noggin tp work out how to use your eyes, magic and wind. It all sounds awfully weird, but take my word for it, it’s great.

This is easily one of the 5 best PSP games out there. Similar in vein to the great LocoRoco, it’s simplistic, addictive fun. Which is just perfect for the PSP.

Judgement:

Perfect for quick 10 minute bursts on the train. An essential for PSP owners, if only because it’s unique and quirky. 86.

    I’m having a lot of fun with this game. I think the game will be deceptively cute for some people, because they’ll get several stages in and run into stages in which you’ll have to use relatively complex tactics to defeat enemies. For instance, on one level, you have to whip your army into a frenzy first, then summon the wind juju to alter the direction of the breeze, then charge ahead, but stay far enough away from the enemies so you can pick them off with archers before moving in for the kill.

    Great game, but it’s no push-over!
